The first five minutes are the key element of almost every effort. Writing included.

My friend Patrick McLean has a Five-Minute Pep Talk (that's only four minutes long if you want to hear it).

He's right when he says that the hard part is getting through the first five minutes. Sitting down. Finding your place in the story. Pantsers might need to figure out something interesting to write about. Plotters will look at the next item on the outline. Everybody has their own process.

But every one of us - regardless of process - has to weather that first five minutes.
