Self Publishing Companies

Seems like every week somebody asks me about reputable self-publishing companies. There are hundreds - if not thousands - of them. Unfortunately, they only publish one author--themselves. That's the definition of a self-publishing company.

There are some self-publishing service companies--like KDP and Kobo--but the water gets muddied by all the companies claiming to be self-publishing, or co-op, or hybrid, or whatever vanity press name du jour they shift to. I'm not saying they're all scams, but their business models all have a couple of things in common. They charge too much for marginal services and they make their money from authors paying them instead of readers buying books.

There's a simple diagnostic for determining if it's a legit self publishing service company that just happens to use an unfortunate name. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Who uploads the file?
  2. Who collects the revenue?

If the answer to both those questions isn't "me," walk away.

Any questions?
