Making edits to an email sequence will change its contents going forward wherever that sequence used. It might be helpful to think of it this way:

Automations connect different things together. For example, if you want to have your subscribers get added to a sequence after they opt in to a form, then you'd have to first create the form, then create the sequence, and then you could connect those two together via an automation (i.e. automate them so that signing up to the form → adds them to the sequence). The same sequence can also be used within several different automations, but its content will be the same wherever it's used, since it exists separately from the automation itself.

If you want different versions of sequences in different automations, you'll want to duplicate the sequence (which you can do from its settings page), modify the duplicate, and then ensure any automations are linked to the correct version of the sequence. (So ultimately, they'll all be separate sequences in the end — duplicating it can just help speed up the process vs. creating a new one from scratch.)

It's also worth noting that depending on your use case, you may be able to re-use the same sequence by getting creative with sequence email filters and/or conditional content to help control who gets sent what. But for the most straightforward approach, having different/separate versions is probably the easiest!
